Our Clients Needed Something That Didn’t Exist – So We Built It

Darcy and I have been building something for a long time. It's been our focus, our passion and ocasionally, a bit of an obsession as we fine-tuned every detail. That thing is our multi-website platform, and it’s called BroadSword™.

The Importance of Website Performance

The Importance of Website Performance
Over the last few weeks, I've been working on increasing the performance of our clients' websites. It started when Darcy told me that our servers were alerting him that some sites were using a lot of resources. Based on that knowledge, we could have simply increased the resources available to our servers, but we wanted to see what we could to do optimize each website, reducing the overall load rather than increasing our costs and potentially needing to pass those costs on to our clients.

Building a Career - and a Life

Building a Career - and a Life

As of this summer, I'll have worked for Iconic Group for nine years. That's a long time! A lot has happened in my life since 2008, and I've recently been reflecting on that fact. My career has grown along with the success of our company, and on the personal side, my life has changed in many ways. Looking back at the evolution of my role at work, I can’t help but think of the personal milestones that happened in tandem.

The most recent – and arguably the largest and most exciting event for me – was marrying my wife, Laura. We met in 2011 and after five years together, decided it was finally time to "make it official", so to speak. I wrote about our wedding here, in another blog post.

The Introvert’s Guide to Getting Married

October 15th, 2016 was a big day for me. A little over five years into our relationship and three years after we started living together, my partner Laura and I got married with our families by our sides. Right from the start, we knew we didn’t want to go big. The two of us would definitely describe ourselves as introverts, and that was a major factor – we didn’t want to put ourselves on display in front of hundreds of people. Also, the average cost of a wedding in Canada these days is pushing $30,000, which did not appeal to either or us. So, how did we do it? We did it our way!

The first step was finding a date that worked for the two of us, as well as our families. Once we determined that, we were able to book the wedding chapel at Toronto City Hall. We chose a Saturday and ended up with a booking that was pretty early in the morning, at 10am. Initially this seemed a little too early, but it turned out to be perfect. The weather was ideal that day, and it gave us the chance to have our lunch relatively early so everyone could eat and be on their way. We also had great late morning lighting for our photos.

Podcasts as Entertainment & Productivity Enhancers

Podcasts as Entertainment & Productivity Enhancers

I’ve recently gotten really into podcasts, and I’m not the only one. Their popularity has drastically increased in recent years. Once you start listening to them, it seems to be a slippery slope of discovery. I used to listen to loads of music, but I only find myself doing so occasionally these days. I listen to podcasts while driving, working, housecleaning, gardening, cooking; basically any activity that doesn’t require my ears’ full attention! I would even argue that the focused state I get into while listening to my favourite shows increases my productivity. So, what are some of my favourite podcasts?
