As of this summer, I'll have worked for Iconic Group for nine years. That's a long time! A lot has happened in my life since 2008, and I've recently been reflecting on that fact. My career has grown along with the success of our company, and on the personal side, my life has changed in many ways. Looking back at the evolution of my role at work, I can’t help but think of the personal milestones that happened in tandem.
The most recent – and arguably the largest and most exciting event for me – was marrying my wife, Laura. We met in 2011 and after five years together, decided it was finally time to "make it official", so to speak. I wrote about our wedding here, in another blog post.

October 15th, 2016 was a big day for me. A little over five years into our relationship and three years after we started living together, my partner Laura and I got married with our families by our sides. Right from the start, we knew we didn’t want to go big. The two of us would definitely describe ourselves as introverts, and that was a major factor – we didn’t want to put ourselves on display in front of hundreds of people. Also, the average cost of a wedding in Canada these days is pushing $30,000, which did not appeal to either or us. So, how did we do it? We did it our way!
The first step was finding a date that worked for the two of us, as well as our families. Once we determined that, we were able to book the wedding chapel at Toronto City Hall. We chose a Saturday and ended up with a booking that was pretty early in the morning, at 10am. Initially this seemed a little too early, but it turned out to be perfect. The weather was ideal that day, and it gave us the chance to have our lunch relatively early so everyone could eat and be on their way. We also had great late morning lighting for our photos.

I’ve recently gotten really into podcasts, and I’m not the only one. Their popularity has drastically increased in recent years. Once you start listening to them, it seems to be a slippery slope of discovery. I used to listen to loads of music, but I only find myself doing so occasionally these days. I listen to podcasts while driving, working, housecleaning, gardening, cooking; basically any activity that doesn’t require my ears’ full attention! I would even argue that the focused state I get into while listening to my favourite shows increases my productivity. So, what are some of my favourite podcasts?

Customer service is very important to us at Iconic Group, and as a small business, client relationships are integral to our success. We’ve always provided our clients with ongoing support after their website launched, but as technology advanced, the code behind these websites would become harder to support. That’s not a problem for us anymore, as we now offer regularly updated website framework code. But what exactly does this mean for our clients?
Over the last 2-3 years, we’ve embraced version control and continuous integration strategies for our server and website architecture. These techniques have drastically improved our ability to support our clients and always keep their websites at the highest level of technology and security.

Every developer has a set of tools they use every day. Over the years, I’ve added and removed a number of applications and techniques that have made me the experienced developer I am today. Here’s a look inside my toolbox — the secret weapons that allow me to be efficient, productive and ahead of the curve.
Chrome Developer Tools
Crucial for any front-end developer, Chrome has the best built-in web inspector. I used to use Firefox, then I preferred Safari, but now nothing beats Chrome. A nearly endless repository of extensions fill in the gaps where extra functionality is needed.
